GIGA Leopard is a large-scale project in Delfzijl, Groningen, and is expected to be operational in the second half of 2027. The storage capacity is sufficient to provide renewable energy to all Dutch households for more than half an hour.
The project is located near a major hub for offshore wind power generation. The battery will be connected to TenneT's high-voltage grid via an existing transformer station. GIGA Storage developed both the project and the financing structure with a view to a flexible commercial strategy, collaborating with utilities and energy traders for off-take and optimization of energy storage.
'Crucial role in energy system'
With large-scale battery projects, GIGA Storage says it wants to contribute to a more robust and efficient energy system, as well as broader integration of renewable energy sources.
With the development of battery energy storage systems, GIGA Storage delivers scalable, immediately deployable technological solutions that make it possible to incorporate more renewable energy into the power grid. These systems should play a crucial role in improving the reliability and stability of the energy system, thus accelerating the energy transition.
'We are determined to have Leopard operational on schedule by 2027,' said Kevin Dijkers, CEO of GIGA Storage. 'In doing so, we are building on our experience and innovative approach to realizing large-scale battery storage.'
Investment
IntraVia invested heavily in GIGA Storage in 2024. 'We believe that supporting flexible energy infrastructures like GIGA Storage is essential for the energy transition, strengthening security of supply and building resilient energy systems in Europe,' said Vincent Menager, Investment Director at InfraVia. 'We look forward to the commissioning of Leopard as an important milestone. In addition, we are actively supporting GIGA Storage in realizing a pipeline of more than 2 GW of new projects, including the fully licensed GIGA Green Turtle project in Dilsen-Stokkem, Belgium. With a capacity of 700 MW and 2.8 GWh, this is expected to be the largest battery storage project in Europe.'
