Charging stations and heat pumps work just fine without a three-phase connection

Especially when installing a heat pump and a charging station, a three-phase connection is currently recommended. However, this poses a problem in much of the Netherlands. In most cases, upgrading to 1x35A is sufficient. And that also means there will be less strain on the entire grid.

This is the conclusion of the report “Opportunities Behind the Meter.” In smaller, well-insulated homes, a higher-capacity connection is not necessary anyway if an all-electric heat pump and an electric cooktop are installed. In some cases, however, smart control systems and extra attention to insulation and ventilation are needed, according to the study, which was commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy.

Also, a charging station

If a charging station is added, a 1x25A connection will be a bit tight, but that doesn’t mean you have to upgrade immediately to 3x25A—not even for larger homes. In almost all cases, 1x35A is sufficient for a fully electric heat pump. A charging point for a car is also possible with 1x35A, provided that a load balancer distributes the available electrical power among the various devices.

Opinion

According to the study, the problem therefore lies not with the connection, but with insulation and poorly calibrated heat pumps. The key recommendation following the study is therefore to treat the upgrade from 1x25A to 1x35A differently than upgrades to 3x25A. With this connection, the barriers to sustainability are removed for most households, and these improvements can often be achieved without physical modifications.
