ATAG's new hybrid iQ boiler eliminates the need for a separate control unit because the boiler and heat pump work directly together. It also halves the installation time of the hybrid system. The boiler has an extra-long warranty period of 15 years, a maintenance interval of four years and maintains the same high efficiency over its lifetime. Of course, we want to know more about that.
The new ATAG iQ boiler has been specially developed for the hybrid transition and replaces the current i series. Whereas a traditional hybrid heat pump system still requires a separate indoor module to connect the heat pump to the boiler, this module is neatly integrated with the iQ. "The hybrid system thus consists of just two components that we connect directly with each other, allowing heat pump and boiler to work together seamlessly and optimally," explains Julian van der Post, product manager at ATAG.
Installed in one day
"By adding additional logic and hydraulic components to the central heating boiler, we were able to create a very compact solution," Van der Post continues. You can also build the hybrid system nice and fast. "We reduced the installation time considerably, namely from two days to one day. Often still with two people, because a heat pump is simply a bit heavier."
The new iQ boiler is also immediately perfect to combine with the ATAG Interion. "That's our new compact heat pump that you install completely indoors. A very nice solution, also for installers, because it simplifies maintenance and you no longer have to be outside."
Sustainable boiler
ATAG uses different materials in central heating boilers than is usual in the market, Van der Post emphasizes. "Because we want to guarantee the highest quality and reliability, we use a lot of metal. Think of the piping, but also components that are at the bottom of the boiler. Furthermore, all connections towards the installation are made entirely of metal."
You will therefore encounter virtually no plastic in a boiler like the ATAG iQ. "It is a very sustainable concept, which is why we give as much as a 15-year warranty on the boiler." It also requires little maintenance, which allows for an extra-long maintenance interval. "We recommend maintenance once every four years. Of course, that can be done synchronously with maintenance on the heat pump."
Boiler is here to stay
Julian van der Post does not see central heating boilers disappearing from the Dutch market any time soon. "The bulk of the heating products sold is still the central heating boiler. That will remain so in the coming years. People are more likely to opt for sustainability in the form of extra insulation and replacing glazing before changing the heat generation. The central heating boiler therefore remains an important concept, and I believe that our hybrid solutions make a good contribution to sustainability. Hybrid is also a very nice interim solution to eventually move towards all electric."
Three-zone exchanger
The iQ series uses a heat exchanger concept from ATAG that has more than proven itself. Van der Post: "Our heat exchanger has three zones. As a result, we have the lowest NOx emissions (nitrogen oxide) in the market, we can completely burn out CO (carbon monoxide) to CO2 and our iQ boiler achieves the highest efficiency in the market."
Furthermore, this heat exchanger is made of stainless steel. "The great advantage of a stainless steel exchanger is that it is guaranteed to keep the same efficiency throughout its service life. Whereas an aluminum exchanger starts to corrode, so you see the efficiency drop at some point."
Two heat exchangers
There is even a second heat exchanger in the boiler. At ATAG they call it the Economizer. Van der Post: "Flue gases are released from the first heat exchanger and they often have residual energy in them. With our Economizer we extract that last bit of energy. Like wringing out a dish towel one more time. We use this energy to pre-heat tap water. In addition to free extra heat, this also yields a nice extra saving of up to ten percent on gas consumption. That's unique for our boilers."
