Energy supplier Vandebron, grid operator Stedin and investor Klimaatfonds Nederland conclude a capacity limiting contract for solar farm Markiezaat in Rilland. This contract will free up 40 MW of capacity, allowing sustainable energy to be properly distributed in the region. Klimaatfonds Nederland's solar farm can switch off on demand so that the power grid remains stable and major failures in the Rilland area can be better prevented.

The cooperation between Klimaatfonds Nederland, Vandebron and Stedin is important to realize flex solutions like this one. This capacity limiting contract is important in prelude to the coming months when a lot of solar and wind energy will be generated in Rilland. By switching off the solar farm at pre-agreed times, transmission capacity is shifted and more power remains available. The power that is released is used to keep the power grid stable and prevent outages. It does not yet accommodate customers on the waiting list.

There has been congestion for feed-in power in South Beveland since July 2024. The congestion management study, which looks at solutions to congestion, found that there are opportunities to make agreements with companies for flexible power. This contract ensures that the power grid remains secure. It does not mean that more space will be freed up and customers can be taken off the waiting list. More flexible contracts are needed for that.

Room for more green projects

Rick Bitter, director of producers at Vandebron: "By making agreements about when we do and do not deliver, we can prevent grid congestion and create space for more green projects. In this way we are building together an energy system that is ready for the future."

"This contract helps us to keep the power supply in Rilland stable for longer during peak times, when a lot of wind and solar is fed into the grid," says Stedin Regional Director Martin Martens. "In Rilland we already deploy the emergency lane and to protect that 'extra lane' this contract is a nice step, but more flexi contracts are needed in this area."

Mark Straver, Technical Director of Klimaatfonds Nederland: "Our renewable energy projects are being delivered future-proof and it is great to see that this is already creating the intended collaborations that will make the grid infrastructure more efficient. In this area, together with the municipalities of Reimerswaal and Woensdrecht and developer EnergieXP, we are looking forward to realizing even more projects where locally generated green power will be both flexibly deployed and converted into green hydrogen."
